Concept art for Fire and Brimstone (working title)

After the discussion about titles, I started thinking more and more on how books present themselves to readers, and the power of first impressions.

I’ve been mulling over some ideas about what the cover of Fire and Brimstone would look like, should I have that creative freedom. A long time ago, back when I was fantasizing about self-publishing via a WordPress site, I’d titled the first book of the series “Collision,” the second book “Growth,” and the third book “Ultimatum.”

Old "Sophie of the Demons" cover

Wow, this is old.

I’ve obviously left those titles behind, along with the associated cover art—but I’ve never stopped thinking about this one question:

How do I seduce a reader without frightening her? How do I tell enough of my story in the cover to lure her in, but not reveal so much that the climax isn’t a surprise?

I’m not sure, but this image of the burning eyes has been following me around like a hungry dog.

I really like the picture of the eye – I’d have a black background and that picture.

Why not try putting the eye in the Sophie of the Demons book cover illustration? Just for kicks, to see what it looks like. LOVE the eye…
