THE V-WORD: RivetedLit post & giveaway

March 24, 2016 by Kiersi

Today I have a really extra-special surprise for everyone. I’m giving away a copy of a beautiful, powerful anthology that I was lucky enough to be a part of called THE V-WORD.

The V-Word

Yes, I took a photo of it on my bed, for thematic quality.

THE V-WORD was spearheaded and edited by the thoughtful, talented Amber J. Keyser. This anthology meets a need that desperately needs filling—a need for real experiences from real women about what it’s like to have sex for the first time.

Having my essay included in THE V-WORD has been a huge gift for me—a way to explore and process my own experience with messy first-time sex, and to pass what I’ve learned on to younger women in a world that often refuses to be straight or frank with them.

I was even given the privilege of writing a blog post, titled “Writing Compassion Into Truth,” about what it was like to write for THE V-WORD, over on Riveted LitThis was an important post for me to write. My first experience was not pretty or pleasant, and it was easy to blame it on myself.

But teen girls are faced with a mountain of misinformation, of peer pressure and parent pressure and social pressure about what sex is supposed to mean, how one’s supposed to go about it, and it feels like no path could possibly be right.

Except that every path is right. Every path is yours. And so was mine.

Here’s just a small piece of what this powerful anthology is all about:

First time sex is a big unknown. Will it be candlelight and rose petals or quick and uncomfortable? Is it about love or about lust? Deciding to have sex for the first time is a choice that’s often fraught with anxiety and joy. But do you have anyone telling you what sex is really like?
In The V-Word seventeen writers pull back the sheets and tell all, covering everything from straight sex to queer sex, diving-in versus waiting, and even the exhilaration and disappointment that blankets it all. Some of their experiences happened too soon, some at just the right time, but all paint a broad picture of what first-time sex is really like.
Funny, hot, meaningful, cringe-worthy, gross, forgettable, magnificent, empowering, and transformative, the stories in The V-Word are never preachy, but provide a map for teens to chart their own course through the steamy waters of sex. With The V-Word girls can finally take control, learn what’s on the horizon, and eliminate the fear and mystery surrounding this important milestone.

This only scratches the surface of the witty, poignant, and emotional stories that lie within THE V-WORD. I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of reading all of the essays, and so often I wish a book like this had been available to teenage me.

Things could have been a lot different.

How to Win a Copy of THE V-WORD

I read your poignant and moving guest blog. Your observations about how hard it is for us to grant ourselves the same kind of compassion that we give to others struck me very deeply. I hope you will re-post the entry here, if allowed, for more people to see. It should be required reading.

That’s a good idea, I should have reposted it here. I’m glad it spoke to you. I think many of us have a hard time cutting ourselves some slack from time to time.
